Recommended Gear & Resources

The specific gear, resources, and tools I used to manage and grow the EBWH community.

Over the years, I’ve tested numerous tools, resources, and gear, some of which have risen to the top of my must-have list. I developed this page to share what I currently use to manage and grow the EBWH community.

I share only what I trust and know, but before we begin, I have an important disclosure:

Books & Educational Tools

Fearing the Black Body by Sabrina Strings, PhD

This is an affiliate link.

Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia by Dr. Sabrina Strings is truly a masterclass in understanding how the bodies of women have been racialized for decades. In this book, you learn how deeply ingrained anti-Blackness is, and it’s connected to the anti-fat bias that is present in our healthcare system today. Rather than health, this book illustrates that the desire for thinness is rooted in racism, classism, and the oppression of women. Regardless of where you are in your career, every health professional should read this book.

Legacy by Uché Blackstock, MD

Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons With Racism in Medicine by Dr. Uché Blackstock is an enlightening book that illuminates the inequities in the U.S. healthcare system. I believe all healthcare providers and policymakers should read it. Addressing these disparities is essential to creating a more equitable healthcare system.

PubMed

PubMed is my go-to resource for finding peer-reviewed research on health equity and cultural competence topics. Many journal articles are “open source,” but those that aren’t can be accessed through a university affiliation or local library. If you’re interested in the latest biomedical literature, I highly recommend using PubMed.

Primal Video

As someone who deeply values education for developing new skills, I appreciate Primal Video for helping me create better videos and finally launch my YouTube channel. They inspired me to create this page to give them credit for what I’ve learned over the past year. I’ve invested in their Primal Video Accelerator (PVA) Community, but you can also get started by watching their YouTube channel.

Content Creation Gear & Tools

Canva Pro

Hands down, Canva Pro is my preferred online platform for creating graphics and marketing material. Although some will say you don’t need a Pro account, I would argue that it’s a worthwhile investment if you develop a lot of graphics. From the thumbnails I create for newsletters to the b-rolls I use in YouTube videos, I get everything from Canva. Having a Pro account makes creating copies much more straightforward and speeds up the creation process.

Google Workspace

I’ve been a fan of Google Workspace (formerly Google Suite) for nearly a decade because it allows me to create content and manage documents seamlessly. From keeping track of events on Google Calendar to drafting my newsletters in Google Docs, I appreciate the many tools that come with Google Workspace at an accessible price.

Grammarly

Even though I aim to avoid being so “academic” in my writing, I appreciate the AI tools in Grammarly. While it assists with your grammar, it also has fantastic AI tools for improving your writing or rephrasing text. Even this paragraph was improved with Grammarly, so you can thank that tool for helping me clarify my messaging.

iPhone 16 Plus

I upgraded from the iPhone 13 to the iPhone 16 Plus because I noticed my battery wasn’t holding a charge. Since I will be increasing my video creation, I knew I needed a phone capable of keeping up with that increased demand. I’m happy that I made the switch, as the video quality has improved from the 13, and the Plus is exactly what I need right now.

MacBook Pro

I recently upgraded from my MacBook Air to the latest MacBook Pro because I have been deeply involved in content creation. The larger screen has made it easier for me to write the EBWH Community newsletter. Additionally, the ability to quickly and easily AirDrop videos between my iPhone and Mac has significantly improved my video editing process.

Substack

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the platform I used to create this page as an essential tool. Although I’ve used various blogging and course platforms over the last decade, Substack is the best platform for growing an active and engaged newsletter community. I’ve been able to truly leverage search engine optimization and traffic directly from the Substack app more than from any other platform I have been on in the last decade.

Marketing Tools

Meta Business Suite

Even though Meta hasn’t been at the top of my ‘friends list’ lately, I have been loyal to the Meta Business Suite for years. There is little reason to schedule content outside of Meta, as it provides free tools for use in the Business Suite. As I use Facebook and Instagram daily, managing everything through the Business Suite only makes sense.

Social Curator

From marketing plans to social media captions, Social Curator has given me exactly what I need to market the EBWH Community effectively. First, they have a fantastic content library of templates and photos that enable me to appear on social media regularly. Second, they have a tremendous community of “Curators” who share their wins and struggles, so you know you’re not alone. Plus, the monthly marketing action plans and live classes have helped me be more consistent with getting content out to you.

Payment & Checkout Tools

Kajabi

This is an affiliate link.

I was a Kajabi customer long before the EBWH Community, as it was the first online platform I invested in when I started my previous business, A Fitness Mindset. Over the decade, Kajabi has grown immensely from an online course platform to a place to host your membership, community, podcast, and even invoice payments. That’s why I’m a proud partner of Kajabi and highly recommend it.
